New BJPS Co-Editor-in-Chief Appointed

The British Society for the Philosophy of Science has appointed Tim Lewens as the new Co-Editor-in-Chief. ‘The Committee and Past Presidents of the society are delighted that Professor Tim Lewens will take up the post’, BSPS President James Ladyman said.

‘Despite the role being burdensome, lacking glory or riches, making one a target of the paranoid, self-aggrandising fantasies of colleagues and friends, and being very very obviously a trap, the Society received many high-quality applications. Congratulations, Tim!’, said Deputy Editor Elizabeth Hannon.

‘It’s a job I take on with some trepidation’, Lewens said. ‘However, I am very lucky to be joining such a strong and experienced team in the shape of Robert Rupert, Elizabeth Hannon, and our crack group of Associate Editors.’

Tim will begin work with Co-Editor-in-Chief Robert Rupert in January 2025. In the weeks prior to this, he will shadow the out-going Co-Editor-in-Chief, Wendy Parker, who steps down after nearly nine years sharing the helm, first with Steven French and then with Rupert.

‘It’s been an enormous pleasure working with Wendy’, Rupert said. ‘She showed me the ropes when I came on and has been an inspiration and an exemplary partner throughout our time overseeing the BJPS together. Her contributions to the editorial process have been consistently insightful, patient, fair, and sensible; and she’s exceptionally hardworking and able to cover an impressive range of topics and areas to boot. I am very sorry to see her go. At the same time, I am excited to begin collaborating with our incoming Co-EiC, Tim Lewens. The BSPS could not have made a better choice for Wendy’s replacement. Onward!’

Lewens added, ‘Wendy Parker has done a magnificent job as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the BJPS, and it’s a privilege to be entrusted with taking over from her in the role’.

Ladyman also offered his thanks to Parker, ‘for her outstanding service to philosophy of science and the BSPS’.

The appointment is made by the Committee of the BSPS, who take advice from the Society’s past presidents and the journal’s current editors. Full details of current and past editors-in-chief, as well as the rest of the editorial team, can be found here.
